Prefer Coffee,Cricket or Hinduism?
•June 4, 2008 • Leave a CommentAfter the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), it was the turn of Hindu Munnani to cry foul of Actor Kamal Hassan’s yet to be released ”Dasavatharam”,in which he plays a record number of ten roles, the first of its kind in the Indian film industry.
Earlier, the VHP saw red over the film reportedly containing the clash between saivite and vaishanvite saints during the 16th century AD and wanted Haasan to remove such scenes in the film.
Now,its Hindu Munnani that has warned it would block the release of “Dasavatharam” if scenes which in its perception are objectionable and wound the religious sentiments of the Hindus are not removed.
Previously,so hilariously, the same committee has objected kamal for jumping over walls and involving in fight sequences, wearing the sacred MADISAR (the style in which the saree is worn by the brahmin community in Tamilnadu) in one of his movies.
I would like to recollect here, the suspension of screening the movie , ‘Da Vinci Code’ in various parts of India, inspite of the movie and the book not being objected by the major christian nations.
So is it something like Indians are more prone to religions or not matured/cool enough to take these silly issues lightly on the go rather than blowing up a scene.
I would not like to blame it on all Indians since I myself,an apatheist(someone who considers the question of the existence of gods as neither meaningful nor relevant to his or her life; nor perhaps to human affairs) regard religion as yet another ‘Preference’ to drink tea or choosing to watch cricket.
Everything goes perfectly well as long as my community of ‘Cricket Lovers’/'Coffee Lovers’/'Green Lovers’/VHP/Hindu Munnani doesn’t end up in messing up the ‘Right To Expression’ of the peers.
Hope it wont be much long for us to mature and realize that these religions and gods of the present days are man made and highly utilized for cooking clever politics.
Lets enjoy religion as a cup of self preferred beliefs and practices that keep us warm like a cup of tea on a rainy evening and it is very common that someone criticizes tea for mug of beer and there are also a chunk like me enjoying to stay quiet and have a cool nap.
Row,Row,Row Your Boat
•June 4, 2008 • Leave a CommentIncidentally, I had the chance of acting this english nursery rhyme in real, during my visit to kodaikanal, the princess of hill stations, tamilnadu.
Me and my parents, accompanied with my aunt chose for a brief visit to kodai to beat this summer.Unfortunately, this enchanting spot at 2195m high on the western ghats has become a victim to ‘Global Warming’.We could easily feel the climatic ruins of this place from our past visits in the previous years.(Need to talk about this important issue in some other post)
Le’me come to ‘Row Boating’.Being a lifetime member at the KBRC ( Kodaikanal Boating and Rowing Club),my aunt displayed her perfect rowing skills, carrying us in a small scull (row boats).I got impressed and craved to learn the art of row boating. We switched positions and she gave me the control of the oars. She taught some rowing basics and the most important part of synchronizing the oars.
I tried for nearly 2 hours before i could get the feel of what row boating is all about. To be frank,it needed a good amount of effort and stamina, particularly in our forearms,to drive the oars and move the boat with 2/3 co-passengers on board.
The next day,i perfected the art of sculling(means to propel a sculling boat or skiff, using two oars, one in each hand) from a trainer cum boatman.I bet most of us would be feeling it easy to go for the Rearward facing system of rowing where a seated rower pulls on one or two oars, which lever the boat through the water. The pivot point of the oars (attached solidly to the boat) is the fulcrum. The motive force is applied through the rower’s feet. The fulcrum is generally located on the boat’s gunwale. The actual fitting that holds the oar may be as simple as one or two pegs or a metal oarlock (also called rowlock – “rollock”). In performance rowing craft, the rowlock is usually extended outboard on a “rigger” to allow using a longer oar for increased power.
On the Final day, I took the boat all alone and enjoyed row boating to the fullest with kodai-FM by my side( playing some good old tamil songs) posing as Wordsworth’s stolen boat ride !
The E.A factor of any Profession
•June 4, 2008 • 1 CommentA month back, I happened to derive an interesting factor ‘E.A’ that is applicable to all professions/jobs we do.
where,
E-is for ETHICS and A- is for ATTITUDE.
Let’s begin with Attitude.Irrespective of the legality of our profession, its our Attitude towards our task which makes our progress, a reality.None could deny the fact that we all posses a strong attitude towards our profession. The problem arises as to whether the strength in our attitude is either positive or negative. This is decided by our ‘Self Motivation Factor’(SMF) which keeps changing every now and then.
I would better put it in this way.
The Theoretical way:
‘X’ climbs ‘N’ steps of a ladder ‘L’ in ‘H’ hours and has reached the top of the ladder.
‘Y’ climbs ‘N-n’ steps of ladder ‘L1′ in ‘H1′ hours and is about to reach the top of the ladder.
Let ‘Z’ be the audience who generally criticizes that ‘Y’ may not reach the top of the ladder incase H1>H.(By theory of direction proportion!)
The above statement from ‘Z’ should be ignored incase ‘L1′ is our professional ladder since ‘Z’ might not be aware of the fact that X not equals Y and L not equals L1.
So its Y’s (our) Self Motivating Factor or in simple our ‘ATTITUDE’ which keeps us away from all these criticisms during Y’s excess period of stay(H-H1) in the ladder and keep us moving towards the top of the ladder with the same pace.
The Practical Way:
I had been regularly traveling in a passenger train from Bangalore to Salem,on every fortnight, for the past 1 year. Its quite common to learn more on a co-passenger in such general compartments rather than one in a reserved compartment.Me and my friends took note of a young lad who used to clean the leg room of each compartment and looks for some money.Amidst some other people who either beg or demand for money by doing nothing, this guy stood as an exception. He neither does his job with imperfections nor demands for money.Recently,a month back I happened to see the same fellow in a tucked in shirt and a tidy pant with a bag by his side.He is now selling keyholders, pens, lighters, bands and other such petty articles. It has been his strong positive attitude which kept him moving for the past one year and made him what he is today. He is neither a Graduate nor trained on the Management principles. It would’nt be surprising that down the line, I may see this fellow, owning a shop at the railway station, if he continues to move with the same motivation and attitude.
Ethics:
Unlike Attitude, Ethics might not be that important factor for one’s progress in his profession. This is because, ethics is not ruled by intellect rather by conscience.Smart business doesn’t encompass ethics even in its smallest fractions.
Professional Ethics, in no way can be predicted from one’s qualification, riches, success, position or post in his career and vice versa.
A Practical Irony:
Once,me and my father stopped the scooter along the roadside to mend my father’s torn slipper.A 70 year old cobbler took around 10 minutes and had mend my dad’s shoe with utmost perfection. He charged 3 bucks for which I gave a 5 rupee note.I wanted to tip the fellow for his perfection and so turned back my way asking for no change. He stopped me,unbuckled my sandals and started polishing them.Again came a perfect feat from him to compensate for the 2 bucks i tipped. My sandals shinned with his professional ethics.
Once,me and friends went to a nearby sophisticated restaurant in Bangalore. We ordered for some chicken.Inspite of very little crowd, the bearer took more than 30 mins to deliver the order. The chicken was roasted heavily and had almost turned black. We called the manager and asked for a replacement. The annoyed manager took another 30 mins to bring back a normal one. When we asked for lemons, the manager turned down our requests, claiming that they ran out of lemons.Purposefully,we ordered for a lime soda and there came the lemon. We then pin pointed the ethics they missed out for a piece of lemon, inspite of charging more than what the dishes were really worth.
Many such unethical issues happen even in big organizations for gaining unrealistic profits in a more unrealistic time. This shows the lack of patience among these people to grow richer.
All such ethical issues can either be concealed or unfaithfully justified calling it as ‘Smart Business’ because its mostly between the businessman and himself and rarely exposed to the public.Something similar to our character in the dark.
So,the ball is in our court. Its up to each one of us to either go by ethics or not.But do remember,if you ve decided to go by ethics, you need not hunt for theories or principles on professional ethics and their applications.Just consult with your conscience once regarding the decision taken by your intellect.
Hope we all wish to live with an ethical job so as with a legal wife !
Stars on Earth–now in theatres
•June 4, 2008 • Leave a CommentTaree Zameen Par:
Please do watch the movie before going further in to this post to feel the actual warmth of this simple yet beautiful portrait,TZP.
The first thing that made me wonder struck is the immense maturity of Amir in handling such a delicate storyline and his daring to do that in his debut attempt. Then its of course, the young kid who steals the show making almost all the faces so naturally. He has lived the various expressions and adds to the casualness of today’s schooling smarties.
Above all, a kind lesson is imparted to our parents and teachers, particularly in a nation like India, where “How to bring up a child coping to this competitive scenario?”, strikes as the billion dollar question.
Queries are answered via sharp scripts like,”Thers a cold world out there.Everyone wanted to grow toppers and rankers in their homes”, “Other than doctor, engineering and management is unacceptable”, “Every child has his own quality, own expertise and own desires”If you like to race, then breed horses”,”Putting the weight of your ambitions on the child is worser than child labor”.
The movie is defended by all supporting characters like Ishan’s father who has naturally depicted a busy,responsible,ears-closed,mouth-open dads. Thanks for preserving Ishan’s elder brother role by avoiding negative traits to his character,to add sympathy to Ishaan.
In a nutshell, three noteworthy things, I managed to grasp were:
1. Do not ever try to compare/mock/photocopy your kids with the peers.
2.Preserve the child’s individuality from the very beginning rather than imposing parents unfulfilled wishes of their childhood, without inspecting whether the child has a natural liking for it.
3.Crap! Device India’s primary education system from the scrap.( I now really hate the way i was admitted to my school for class xi for having scored above 900 out of 1100 in my board exams which was their filtering criteria.)
5 Quick Suggestions for Primary Education System in India:
1.Parents educational status/religion or community should have nothing to do with a child’s admission in to schools and providing info regarding the same should be made optional.
2.Purpose of screening tests should be for identifying children of varied calibers rather than filtering out their admissions in to the schools.
3.Academics,Sports and Arts should be the crux of education and all 3 should be dealt with equal importance.
4.The area of expertise of the child among the above 3 should be spotted from the very beginning and it should be nourished with extra care instead of pushing him/her in to all areas.
5.Exams and number based ranking system should be aborted.Just performance bands for all 3 skills(academics, sports and arts) should be released.
Taking cue from `Taare Zameen Par`, the Chandigarh administration has decided to start a new course to sensitize and train the teachers for identification of children with learning disabilities. The administration will also start a new resource centre to take away the stress and tension from the parents of such children.
Preaching valuable lessons to the society are prayers.Practicing them is noble;
Action—Index of the Mind
•June 4, 2008 • Leave a CommentMind collectively refers to the aspects of intellect and consciousness manifested as combinations of thought, perception, memory, emotion, will and imagination;.( And so are my ‘Categories’ entitled !)
These scientific mind-indexings can be related to our innumerous thoughts/ideas that keep flowing across our minds every now and then.
What does Science say?
The realtionship of the mind to the body can be resolved using 2 ideas;
1.Dualism–mind and body are in some way separate from each other.
2.Monoism–mind and body are not ontologically distinct kinds of entities.
Many modern philosophers of mind adopt their different ways that the mind is not something separate from the body.
Science concludes that Mind and Body are no two entities and almost ‘Inseparable’.
How do we symbolise mind?
Do we comply with science in this regard? Let’s explore a bit.
Incident #1:
I had almost got ready for my office that day.Its 10 mins to 9 in the morning. While taking a quick scan of the TV channels,I came across one my most favourite old songs which they rarely play in these recent days.My mind was almost set in watching it and sat infront of my television.Just a few seconds later,my body gave a jerk and I stood up involuntarily.A scene, myself missing my office cab and waiting for the crowded government buses, relayed in my mind.I immediately switched off the TV,locked the doors and rushed to my bus stop.
Incident #2: ( A scene from a popular Indian movie)
An old man is hit fatally by a speedy vehicle and suffering with the last traces of life on a busy commerical road.An ordinary person who in no way related to the victim (‘hero’ as per the movie) stops a car and asks for help. The owner of the car argues with the person claiming that he has just registered the car and carrying the victim would blood-stain his new white car-seats.Some others willing to help were scared of the consequences after helping the victim.(police enquiry, hospital formalities, their busy schedules,etc.,).The victim gets admitted very late and eventually dies.
From Incidents #1 and #2,
Consciousness and Intellect drive two different ideas contradicting to the concept driven by science.
There is always a trade off between the conscience and the intellect. The body acts in the direction of the stronger among the two.Its practically not possible for the body to act to the commands of our conscience most of the times.
Whenever the body yields to our intellect, a feather is added to our ‘Change’ ;
Whenever the body yields to our conscience, a feather is added to our ‘Character’ ;
Both ‘Changes’ and ‘Character’ are the most acceptable ways of human life, but going for the right thing at the right time are supposed to refine with ages to attain a healthy matured life.
As of me,
For the incident #1 — a CHANGE is accepted.
For the incident #2–a CHARACTER is expected.
Analysing our prominent ‘changes’ and ‘character’ per day is possible thru daily chat with our minds.
Gradually, listening to these whispers of your mind should make ur body act accordingly.
Afterall, “Our Actions are the indices of our Minds”. (Faces are no longer the index of any mind !)
